There is a song I cannot play while driving. Not because it is bad — it is one of my favourites. Because the first eight bars put me on the N1 at midnight in 2017 with someone who is not in my life anymore, and I would rather not be there while operating a vehicle.

Everyone has one of these. That is not a poetic claim, it is just true, and it is the strangest thing about music that we have all agreed to treat as normal. A three-minute file can relocate you in time. Nothing else in your pocket does that.

What has always bothered me is that no music platform is built around it. They are built around genre, artist, and what is popular this week. All useful. None of them have anything to do with why you actually reach for a particular song at eleven at night.

So there is a part of this platform called Moments, and it is my attempt at the other thing.

A Moment is not a playlist. I want to be precise about that, because it looks like one. A playlist is a list I sat down and made. A Moment is something the platform notices — it looks across the mixes, the records and the writing, finds the things that share a feeling or a time or a place, and gathers them. Golden hour. Late night. Home. The long drive.

The reason it works that way is that I do not think I am qualified to tell you what a moment is. I know what a record meant to me in the room where I made it. I have no idea what it meant to you on a Tuesday in a city I have never visited. If Moments were hand-curated they would just be my memory, dressed up as yours.

So instead they assemble themselves, and they will get better as there is more here to assemble from. Right now they are thin — a handful of mixes and not much else, because this platform is eight days old in public terms. That is the honest picture. In six months some of these will be genuinely surprising and I will not have chosen a single one of them.

The one I find most interesting already is Night Drive, partly because it pulled in four mixes I would never have grouped together and I think it is right about all four. There is something slightly unnerving about a system agreeing with you about a feeling you never articulated.

I should say what this is not. It is not a mood ring, and it is not trying to guess your emotional state from your listening and sell you something. There is no advertising here. There is nothing to sell you. The only thing a Moment is optimised for is being a good place to spend forty minutes.

If you want to try it, do not start by browsing all of them. Pick the one that matches where you actually are right now — if it is late, go to the late one — and let it run. That is the whole interaction. It is meant to feel like someone handing you something rather than a menu.

And if a mix in there ever puts you somewhere you did not expect to be, I would like to know about it. Not for analytics. Just because that is the entire reason I do this.
