A Soulful Journey From Soweto

Eight episodes, one place. Why I make mixes in series instead of one at a time.

There is a photograph on the cover of SoulWhereTo that I did not take. A street in Soweto, a bright orange house, the tower in the distance, sky the colour of a swimming pool. I looked at it for a long time before I made the first episode, and then I made eight.

That is the whole argument for series, really. A single mix is a night. A series is a place you can keep going back to.

I did not plan it that way. The first SoulWhereTo was just a mix. Then I made another one and realised I was still in the same room, musically — the same warmth, the same tempo, the same slightly stubborn refusal to hurry. Calling it Volume 2 was not branding. It was accuracy.

Now there are eight episodes, and they are meant to be heard in order the way a season of anything is meant to be heard in order. Not because there is a plot, but because the early ones are rougher and the later ones know what they are doing, and hearing that happen is more interesting than hearing the polished version alone.

This is the part of listening I think we have quietly lost. A 28-minute mix asks for 28 minutes. That is an unfashionable request. Everything else in your phone is built to be interruptible, and a mix is the opposite — it is the one format where the transitions are the point, and skipping is vandalism.

So the platform is built to let you leave and come back without losing your place. Start an episode, close the app, do your life, and it will still be there where you left it. That is not a feature I am particularly proud of inventing — every podcast app does it — but almost nothing does it for mixes, and mixes are the format that needs it most.

There are five other series here. The Kwaito Experience is four episodes of the music I grew up inside, and it is the one that took me longest to make because I kept second-guessing whether I had the right to make it. Heart break Hotel is five episodes of old school house and is exactly as dramatic as the name suggests. Broken Soul is broken beat, four deep. Sound Check is where I put the electronic material that does not fit anywhere else, which is a polite way of saying it is the experimental one.

And there is Sunday Reminiscence, which currently has one episode. I am leaving it at one for now. Some things are a series because they are going to be, not because they already are.

If you have never listened to a mix all the way through, I would genuinely start at SoulWhereTo, episode one. Not because it is the best one — it is not, episode five is — but because starting at the beginning is the entire point I am making.

Put it on while you are doing something else. Cooking, driving, cleaning a room you have been avoiding. Mixes are not concert music. They are company.

And if you get four episodes deep and find yourself in Soweto in your head having never been there, then the photograph did its job and so did I.

How does this feel to you?

Be the first to say how this felt. Pick as many as fit.

Energetic
Made you move. You couldn't sit still.
Dreamy
Floating, hazy, somewhere else entirely.
Nostalgic
Took you back somewhere.
Melancholy
Beautiful sadness. The good kind of ache.
Relaxed
Settled you. Shoulders dropped.
Euphoric
That hands-in-the-air moment. Pure joy.
Dark
Heavy and shadowy. A little menacing.
Hopeful
Like something's going to be alright.
Aggressive
Hard and confrontational. Teeth bared.
Reflective
Made you think. Turned you inward.
