Day One

MXR World is live, unfinished, and small. All three of those are on purpose.

It is live.

I have been writing these entries all week in a slightly unreal state, describing a place that did not exist yet in the present tense. Today it exists, which means everything I wrote is now checkable, which is a good and slightly terrifying feeling.

Here is what is actually here on day one. Twenty-eight mixes, all with real audio. Seventeen records going back to 2019. Six mix series, the longest of them eight episodes deep. A Feel Test with almost no answers in it yet. And these six journal entries, which are the first writing that has ever lived alongside my music instead of in a caption somewhere.

Here is what is not here. Any kind of crowd. The follower counts are honest and they are small. A few parts of the platform are quieter than they will be, because they are built to fill up with what listeners do rather than with what I put in them, and nobody has done anything yet.

I thought hard about faking that. It would have been easy — a few invented numbers, some plausible-sounding quotes from listeners who do not exist, and the place would have looked established on day one. I got quite far down that road before deciding against it, and I am glad I did, because a platform whose entire premise is honest description of music cannot open with fabricated evidence of an audience.

So it is small, and it says so.

The other thing I want to be clear about is that this is not finished. Not in the polite way people say that about products. There are parts of this I have deliberately left underbuilt because I do not yet know what they should be, and the only way to find out is to watch what people actually do here.

I am fairly sure the Feel Test is the most important idea in this whole thing, and I am not at all sure the current version of it is right. I think Moments will get much better as there is more to build them from, and I think some of them will turn out to be nonsense. I do not know yet whether people want to read anything at all, or whether the journal will end up being a thing I do for myself.

That uncertainty is the reason I built my own place instead of renting one. On someone else's platform you cannot change the shape of the thing. Here I can, and I intend to, repeatedly, in response to what actually happens.

So the invitation is bigger than usual. Take a Feel Test. Start a series from episode one. Make an account and let the thing remember where you were. If something here annoys you, there is a feedback button on every page and I read all of it, because there are currently few enough of you that reading all of it is possible.

That will not always be true. Enjoy the small room while it lasts.

Thanks for being here on day one.
