Every city you play in South Africa wants a slightly different version of the same set, and learning to read that without losing the through-line of the show has taken me a few years longer than I'd like to admit.

Cape Town crowds tend to want the quieter, more textured material up front. Johannesburg wants energy fast. Durban somehow wants both, usually in the same forty minutes. None of it is a complaint — it's the best part of touring here, figuring out what a room actually needs in real time.

What doesn't change is the moment, in every city, when someone in the front few rows mouths a lyric back at you that you wrote alone in a room with no idea if it would mean anything to anyone. That part never gets old.
